Diabetes Outpatient Clinic

Adult Diabetes Program

1. Team care: The program provides a multi-disciplinary team including endocrinologists, nurse educators, a dietitian, and access to social work staff. Patients are usually evaluated in the clinic three to four times per year.

2. Clinic system: University Hospital in Columbia is a teaching hospital and includes a Level III trauma center. The outpatient facilities are housed in the Cosmopolitan International Diabetes Center, which is located in the University Health Sciences Center. The center features exam rooms, classrooms for patient education and a model kitchen, which is used to teach meal planning to patients and their families. A strong outreach network of clinics complements the services available in Columbia.

3. Diabetes research: The patient care program is closely linked to the research program, which conducts clinical and basic research in diabetes. MU was one of the original 21 clinical centers for the landmark Diabetes Control and Complications Trial (DCCT).

Medical team members at the Cosmopolitan International Diabetes Center work to help patients with diabetes achieve the following:

  • Hemoglobin A1c less than 7 percent

  • Blood pressure less than 130/85

  • Total cholesterol less than 200 mg/dL
  • HDL ("good" cholesterol) greater than 35 mg/dL

If you do not have heart disease:
  • LDL ("bad" cholesterol) less than 130 mg/dL
  • Triglycerides less than 400 mg/dL

If you have heart disease:
  • LDL ("bad" cholesterol) less than 100 mg/dL
  • Triglycerides less than 200 mg/dL

  • Weight within 20 percent of desired weight

  • Avoid severe high or low blood sugar levels

What to expect at the first visit

Before the
first visit:

A Preassessment Form will be sent to you in the mail. Please complete this form and have any requested lab tests done before your first visit.

First Visit

Please bring the Preassessment Form, blood glucose testing supplies (meter, strips and control solutions), blood glucose records, medications (in original containers), insurance information, and lab results (if requested) to your appointment.

You will meet with the dietitian (1 hour) and the nurse educator (1.5 hours), as well as the doctor.

Expect to be here for up to four (4) hours for a history and physical, the development of your treatment plan, diabetes education, and goal setting.

(Note: Your appointment with the doctor may be scheduled for a different day than the appointment with the nurse educator and dietitian.)

Opportunities for Patient Education The Cosmopolitan International Diabetes Center offers many ways that patients can learn more about caring for their diabetes.

Patient Library

The Cosmopolitan International Diabetes Center Patient Library contains a selection of books, videotapes and audiotapes on a variety of diabetes-related topics. It also includes a large number of cookbooks that feature diabetes exchange information for each of the recipes. These are all available for patients to check out at no charge.

Pediatric Diabetes Program

Children's Hospital of the University Hospital and Clinics provides state-of-the-art medical care for children with Type 1 (insulin-dependent) diabetes mellitus. The program offers:

1. Team care: The program provides a multi-disciplinary team including a pediatric endocrinologist, pediatric nurse educators, a pediatric diabetes dietitian and a pediatric diabetes social worker. Typically, new-onset patients are admitted to the hospital for metabolic stabilization and the beginning of self-management training, which lasts about five to seven days. Patients are usually reevaluated in the clinic three to four times per year, and they are usually part of the program until they reach adulthood.

2. Clinic system: Children's Hospital in Columbia has about 200 pediatric beds and includes a Level III trauma center and an adolescent unit. At Children's Hospital patients have access to child-life therapists and a certified public school. The adjacent Ronald McDonald House helps meet housing needs for patients' families. The outpatient facilities are housed in the Cosmopolitan International Diabetes Center, which is located in the University Health Sciences Center. The center features exam rooms, classrooms for patient education and a model kitchen, which is used to teach meal planning to patients and their families. A strong outreach network of clinics complements the services available in Columbia. Outreach locations include Ft. Leonard Wood, Joplin, Kirksville, Poplar Bluff, Rolla, Springfield and West Plains.

3. Diabetes research: The patient care program is closely linked to the research program, which conducts clinical and basic research in diabetes. MU was one of the original 21 clinical centers for the landmark Diabetes Control and Complications Trial (DCCT). The facility's Diabetes Diagnostic Laboratory (DDL) is recognized worldwide for its excellence in diabetes-related laboratory testing.
