GI Basic Science (Pathophysiology) Conference: This conference is held monthly on the fourth Tuesday of the month at 5:00 p.m. Presentations are done by the fellows, with the mentoring of a faculty member.  Topics are selected from a list prepared by the faculty.

Core Curriculum:  A monthly Core Curriculum lecture is given by a GI faculty member on the third Thursday of the month at 5:00 p.m. Topics cover a wide array of issues of importance to the practicing gastroenterologist.

GI Grand Rounds:  This conference occurs on the third Tuesday of the month at 5:00 p.m. and is conducted by a GI fellow.  This conference focuses on case presentations, and discussion will be guided by the patient’s clinical course.  The conference will emphasize patient management approaches and investigates multi-disciplinary approaches to therapy.

GI Medical-Surgical Conference: This multi-disciplinary conference is held monthly on the first Tuesday of the month at 7:00 a.m. It is jointly sponsored by the GI Division and Division of General Surgery. Cases are presented by fellows in the Division of GI and by residents in surgery, who then give a literature review of the topic. There is then a multi-disciplinary discussion of the case by the audience.

Clinical Pathology Conference (CPC):  This is a monthly conference which occurs on the second Tuesday of every month at 5:00 p.m.  This conference focuses on case presentations of individuals with poor outcomes.  Pathological findings and diagnosis will be discussed.  There will also be a review of clinical outcomes and therapeutical approaches.  Additionally, this conference will have a discussion on what specific methods could be utilized in order to prevent undesired outcomes.

GI Pathology/Liver Biopsy Conference: This is a weekly conference, held on Wednesdays at 4:00 p.m., and under the direction of Dr. Alberto Diaz-Arias of the Division of Anatomic Pathology. On alternate weeks, GI biopsy slides and liver biopsy slides are shown. The slides are presented by a pathology resident, with GI fellows expected to interpret the histopathology. After the biopsy findings have been defined, clinical-pathological correlation is provided by the GI faculty-fellows.

GI Journal Club: This conference is held monthly on the second Thursday of the month at 5:00 p.m. and is usually held at a local restaurant. Research articles are presented by two GI fellows and one GI faculty member. 

GI Nutrition Conference: This multi-disciplinary conference is held approximately monthly. Presentations are made by residents rotating on the GI service, by GI fellows, faculty members, and outside guests from other disciplines. The topics can be clinical or basic science in nature.

GI Radiology Conference: This multi-disciplinary conference is held on the fourth Wednesday of the month at 12:00 p.m. Most involve case presentations by a GI fellow, followed by discussion by a radiology faculty member.

GI Research Conference: This conference is held monthly on the fourth Thursday at 5:00 p.m. Some present ongoing research projects within the division. Visiting professors and other UMC investigators-faculty members also present some of the conferences.

Visiting Professor Lectures: Periodically through the year, the GI Division is visited by prominent outside academic gastroenterologists, who give lectures on topics pertinent to their clinical and research interests.
