Endoscopic Mucosal Resection (EMR):
What is endoscopic mucosal resection (EMR)?
Endoscopic mucosal resection (EMR) is a resection of mucosal and submucosal lesions and cancers which is performed endoscopically, as opposed to surgically. EMR provides an endoscopic treatment option for early cancers of the esophagus and colon. The goal of EMR is to allow the gastroenterologist to obtain tissue or resect lesions that were not previously accessible through standard techniques. Ultimately, the treatment of early gastrointestinal cancers by EMR may prevent the need for surgical therapy in selected patients.
This procedure will have very specific instructions, depending on the patient’s situation. Prior to the EMR a nurse clinician will be in contact with the patient to provide the patient with proper instructions and to answer any questions.
